OUR COUNCIL IS 94 YEARS OLD AND MANY KNIGHTS HAVE PASSED ON FROM THIS LIFE, ANDREW KITTEN WHO ALSO WAS A GRAND KNIGHT IN 1961-1963, AND SERVED IN THE NAVY IN WORLD WAR II HAD A STORY TO TELL ( A SHORT VERSION IS LISTED BELOW) and lastly ; WHY DO WE SOMETIMES PUT SEA SHELLS ON TOMBSTONES?.

Andrew was 93 years old. Just think a minute — Andrew was about 6 months younger than our Council here at Slaton.

Andrew Kitten’s picture from World War II, he was 18 years old, his Service # is 9395483.

Pictured at Lubbock Memorial for Veterans shows that Andrew’s name is etched there.   NOTICE   PT 206  in the brick  —  ” ANOTHER STORY BY ANDREW” — in a bit.

The FAMOUS TIECLASP —       ANDREW TOLD THIS STORY TO ANYONE WHO WOULD LISTEN   — including Jerry; so here is a paraphrase  of that story:

ANDREW KITTEN SAID THAT JOHN F. KENNEDY (the same guy who later became President of the United States of America) GAVE HIM THAT TIE CLASP and as I checked out his story a little I found that after John F. Kennedy were rescued from the south sea island John eventually (for a short period of time) was again back on active duty until his back problem was too much. The dates correspond to Andrew’s story about meeting John F. Kennedy while he was in service.

For most of Andrew’s life he did not mention that for he was looking forward to living in Slaton, Texas which can be seen in the next post.

Sometimes, as seen here, there is a time for work and a time for resting.

Back row left to right: Tony Steffens, Alvin Kitten, ? shorty – tell me later, Jimmy Angerer, Milton Piwonka.

Front row left to right: Andrew Kitten,  Tommy Bednarz,  and Walter Bednarz.

Notice too that they are indeed young and possible being on a camping trip.

Jerry says:   Thank all of you for being a part of the Slaton Knights of Columbus #2571.

For other stories like:   Harmonica played by Andrew  — to the tune of OH SUSANNA — well just ask Roy  & Annette Jones —.

Andrew’s body was laid to rest only a few steps away from his Great Grandmother Sophie Kitten as shown here. Just remember this about a brave woman who was born in Germold, West Germany and then moved 5 to 6 times while leaving some of her family behind each time (Germold, Ibbenburen, maybe, Baltimore Maryland, Cincinnati, Ohio, Ferdinand, Indiana, Lawrence, Nebraska and lastly Slaton, Texas. She must have had great faith to help her in her journey through life. And so too that faith IS being past down to Andrew Kitten and his family.
Thank you Andrew.

The practice of putting SEA SHELLS on a grave is described by the page below:

ONE picture is worth a thousand words: Slatonite Roger Rockafellow at Quantico National Cemetery.

Honor Flight 2018 from Lubbock, Texas is the FIRST AND ONLY honor flight to participate in a Veterans Funeral Service, — We were his family.

Roger was overcome with TEARS OF HAPPINESS AND SORROW for participating in the real world of

the price for FREEDOM  that veterans know deep inside that freedom is not free.

Slaton was well represented with 17 individuals, Lubbock had about 60 and the total was 143 on the 2018 flight.

One of the Slatonite’s is barely in the picture ( far right almost out of sight in BLUE  T-Shirt is George Simko , holding a wheelchair for someone else and who is married to Elaine Wolf, daughter of Art & Ludwina (Bednarz)  Wolf of Slaton, Tx..

Back row third from left barely visible is Linda McLaughlin (wife of Dale McLaughlin – long time owner of Mac Olds at Slaton, Tx.)

Others: Jerry Kitten, Chester Young, Jimmie Howell, Loyd Pierce, Trevor Barnes,  Robert Vanstory, Ethan Inmon, Craig Mann, Clint Inmon, Don Holder, Charles Hankson, Vivian Henderson, Roger Rockafellow, Rhonda Cantrell, Casey Davis and Jay Wadsworth (not pictured)

Our Charles Kahlich, a member for almost 3/4 of a century, is escorted by our 4th degree & a Military Honor guard!

HERE I AM LORD!  Our Pastor Angelo Consemino asks St. Charles Borromeo to intercede/escort ‘OUR CHARLIE’ to his final HOME as we here in Slaton escort his earthly body by the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree and finally by the Military Honor Guard where he is interred at Englewood until the resurrection!  St Charles Borromeo lived in the 16th century and who had a famous uncle by the name of Pope Pius IV.
